Approximately 48 million people (1 in 6 Americans) become sick, 128,000 are hospitalized, and 3,000 die each year from foodborne diseases reports the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Salmonella is among one of the leading illnesses that contributes to these alarming numbers. However, foodborne illnesses are largely preventable and with an industry focus on food safety, these numbers can decrease.

Recently, the House of Representatives passed the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act (S .3307) which will grant students access to more nutritious meals and establish nutrition standards for all foods sold in schools. The bill will now make its way to the White House, waiting for President Barack Obama’s signature.
The Act plans to combat childhood obesity and encourages students to make healthy food choices in and out of school. In addition, the Act will reduce childhood hunger.
